This was the theme of the first global meeting of institutional and private investors on the topic of biodiversity.
The 1st Global Asset Owner Meeting (GAOM) was organized under our leadership by Martin Roth, President of the Swiss Pension Fund Association ASIP, in collaboration with a top-class Inviting Consortium, which included the BII - Bundesinitiative Impact Investing, the Blue Marine Foundation, the European Commission (DG Mare - Blue Invest & DG Environment) and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
2.5 days of high-caliber presentations, panel discussions and interactive workshops that brought together biodiversity experts and more than 80 international asset owners.
A new platform to learn from each other, work together on solutions and align investment strategies with the urgent need to preserve and restore our planet with the aim of developing an action plan.
Here we would like to provide you with the most important information about the event.
💡 More than 50 % of the world's economic services and human livelihoods are supported by biodiversity and ecosystem services.
🐝 The link between biodiversity and food security is fundamental: over 75% of our crops depend on pollination.
🌱 Biodiversity has a major impact on our climate: marine and terrestrial ecosystems bind 60 % of our carbon emissions, while the ocean provides 50 % of our oxygen.
💊 Nature offers an important source of remedies: 50% of the medicines approved in the last 30 years come directly or indirectly from natural products.
🚨 Climate change is becoming one of the most important factors in the loss of biodiversity. It is exacerbated by agricultural land use and degradation, overexploitation and pollution.
⌛️ There are around 8 million species on earth (not including 2 billion bacteria), of which at least 25% or even more are threatened with extinction.
✅ But there is hope!
📣 There are already many inspiring and promising initiatives that need to be promoted.
The new FERI Cognitive Finance Institute study "The Biodiversity Advantage" provides the overall content:
We are currently developing an "Asset Owner Action Plan" based on the results of the meeting. All participants are encouraged to share the findings from the event and, in a second step, the action plan within their network.
We are working on making the topic of biodiversity investable. To this end, we are currently working with the portfolio management team to develop a green bond portfolio on the liquid side and an impact offering with a focus on nature on the private markets side.
Following its great success, there will be another GAOM in 2025.

Two weeks before the event, a "homework assignment" was sent out in which the asset owners were asked to answer three questions and read the new FCFI study in preparation.
Together with Marcus Burkert, we have recorded two podcasts for the Deutsche Aktuarvereinigung e.V. in the "DENK LAUT" series on the topics of "Green Bonds" and "Biodiversity". Here, members of the DAV Investment Committee regularly talk to experts about various topics relating to investment and the capital market.
