In turbulent financial times, when traditional investment strategies increasingly face boundaries, alternative sources of returns such as private markets offer attractive solutions. FERI helps both private and institutional investors navigate through the complexity of the segment. FERI has more than 20 years of experience in the private markets space and completed more than 150 fund-, secondary- and co-investments.
Private markets strategies provide investors with an alternative income component that delivers attractive returns and contributes to portfolio diversification.
FERI has many years of experience and a proven track record in analysing private markets funds and managing private markets portfolios. Over the past 20 years, we have carried out more than 150 private markets investments worldwide, making us one of the largest German investors. Investors benefit from our access to top-class fund managers and our strong negotiation positioning.
FERI invests in private equity (buyout, growth, turnaround and venture capital), private equity real estate, infrastructure and private debt.
Our client base includes institutional investors, such as pension funds and endowments, as well as family offices. We manage funds of funds and offer tailor-made managed-account solutions.
FERI targets primary fund investments, co-investments and selectively acquires stakes via the secondary market. This enables the cash flow profiles of private markets portfolios to be optimised.
Institutional clients also benefit from tailor-made administrative solutions, managed accounts and advisory services. The private markets portfolios are managed by in-house teams in Germany and Luxembourg. In addition, FERI can serve existing platform solutions from external providers via advisory mandates.
For many companies, private equity represents an attractive source of financing for the implementation of important projects and the achievement of strategic corporate goals. In addition to pure financial investments, companies particularly appreciate the operational expertise and management support provided by private equity firms. Since the beginning of 2000, FERI has been investing in buyout, growth and turnaround strategies with a strong focus on small and medium-sized companies. Right from the outset, we have been focusing on the small-cap sector and niche strategies, such as rising managers (i.e. funds of the first or second generation managed by experienced private equity managers), due to their attractive risk/return profile.
Private equity is one of the most profitable asset classes and has been an integral part of the total assets of the world’s largest investors for decades.
Infrastructure is typically a physical facility designed to maintain or improve the economic and social performance of a community and supervised by regulatory oversight. It offers a high level of value stability and a broad range of investment strategies due to its real assets. Conservative investors see their investment goals best achieved with stable, ongoing returns in the core infrastructure strategies. This asset class offers more profit-oriented investors an increase in value typical of private equity from the development, construction and/or refurbishment/modernization of an infrastructure property. Since income is partly linked to inflation, correlation and volatility of the investment value are low. Various investment horizons are possible, from 5 to 25 and more years.
In this investment segment, FERI offers both managed-account solutions and advisory services for institutional investors.
Private Equity Real Estate investments are investment strategies that focus on property value enhancement potential (known as value-added and opportunistic property investments).
The asset allocations of experienced private and institutional investors often tend to strongly favour their home markets, and especially the core property sector. As an addition to the property portfolio, Private Equitya Real Estate offers the opportunity to significantly increase the yield potential.
Since 2008, FERI has been investing in Private Equity Real Estate funds in Europe, the USA and selectively in other regions. This means our investments are broadly diversified across this asset class and cover a wide range of individual properties, regions and property segments. Nonetheless, our clients are still able to significantly increase their earnings expectations in the real estate sector.
In this investment segment, we offer both funds of funds and managed-account solutions as well as advisory services for institutional and private investors.
Private debt has a broad structure – the market ranges from infrastructure and property loans to direct lending, mezzanine capital, distressed debt and special situations.
FERI places a great degree of importance on a clear classification of risk-return objectives with the client in order to select the appropriate strategies. This is imperative due to the current very broad range of private debt.
The strengths and weaknesses of the asset class also play a role in our private debt allocation advisory services, as they differ greatly from other private markets strategies. Furthermore, an important benefit of Private Debt investments is its regular yield component, allowing for long-term cashflow planning.
Timber, also known as forest investment, is an asset class that focuses on the purchase and sale of timberland and related timber products. This asset class offers a number of benefits, including a stable distribution yield and attractive total return, inflation protection and diversification. Timber investments are generally long-term investments that can deliver returns over several decades. They are also a renewable resource, making them a sustainable investment option.
The risk-return profile of timber investments can be described as attractive. Another advantage of timber investments is the low correlation to other asset classes. This means that timber investments develop statistically independently of movements on the equity and bond markets. This can help to reduce the overall risk of a portfolio and improve diversification.
FERI offers both managed account solutions and advisory services for institutional investors in this investment segment.
